February 2023 Workshop

Scroll-ology

Presented by NWCS Program Chair Kathryn Kim

Kathryn KimThis webpage contains links to four videos produced in connection with the Northwest Collage Society February 2023 Workshop titled “Scroll-ology,” conducted by NWCS Program Chair Kathryn Kim. If you did not participate in the workshop, you are encouraged to first watch Kathryn’s recorded conversation with Kevin Gustafson, Ph.D., Dean of the Honors College at Northern Arizona University, titled “The Three Ps: From Papyrus to Parchment to Paper | The History and Purposes of Scrolls.” Then enjoy “SCROLL-OLOGY,” as well as “Oriorijiku: Folded Hanging Scrolls | An Interview with Nao Morigo and Megumi Tsuji.” Finally, although Lynn Skordal’s talk about Hatchlings, a scroll she collaged onto a player piano roll, is included in the “Scroll-ology” video, it is being made available on this webpage so that it may be re-watched separately.

Here is a Workshop Supply List: used dryer sheets, freezer paper, matte acrylic medium and/or soft gel gloss, brushes and/or plastic scrapers, collage papers (tissue paper, newspaper, book pages, tea bags, etc.), foam core (roughly 3 x 5 inches), straight pins with ball heads, string/cord/yarn/thread, and a stylus (a double-pointed knitting needle works well).
